Smartphone gaming has exploded in popularity in recent years, and many game franchises that had previously remained exclusive to consoles and PCs have since extended their presence - in various ways - to mobile devices. Despite this, Nintendo continued to resist the shift towards mobile gaming for as long as it could - but earlier this year, it finally gave in to consumer demand.
In March, it revealed plans to work with DeNA "to develop a new core system compatible with a variety of devices including PCs, smartphones and tablets", and the first fruits of those efforts will be unveiled this week.

As the company reported its latest financial results today, its chief executive, Tatsumi Kimishama, referred to its mobile plans by saying: "We will talk about details tomorrow."

Nintendo and DeNA said in March that the first game under their partnership would be released before the end of 2015, with plans to launch a total of five games by early 2017.

Meanwhile, Nintendo is continuing development work on its next-generation console, codenamed 'NX'. Early rumors suggested that the new console would run a version of Android, but Nintendo quickly denied those claims.
