Leading encrypted apps recommended by the Islamic State group for secure messaging said Thursday they were making modest moves to stop jihadists using their technology in the wake of the bloody attacks in Paris, but defended a right to privacy.

Instant messaging app Telegram, created by Russian Internet guru Pavel Durov, said it had blocked dozens of accounts associated with IS that were reportedly being used to spread extremist propaganda.

Meanwhile, the encrypted communications firm Silent Circle said it was tightening access to its mobile apps and secure smartphone to make them harder for terrorists and criminals to use.

marcello coelho

Wish there was a gadget able to transform your boring office uniform into a party outfit, or even a device that guides you straight to new friends?

Then call Marcelo Coelho.

A researcher with Fluid Interfaces at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab, Coelho works at the cutting edge of wearable devices that may be smarter than the person wearing them.

One of the most promising areas is clothing that integrates computers and can practically think for itself.

"You can program your shirt for it to change color, or move to a different pattern," he said. "Maybe you're at work today and want your shirt one way, but you'll be at a party tonight and want it different."

Another creation is a dress with a hemline that rises and falls -- or another dress, decorated with gently opening and closing flowers.

Coelho, 35, was speaking at MIT's 2015 EmTech conference Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro, where for two days leaders in emerging technology give glimpses of the future.

cloudflare savethewebAfter deadly terrorist attacks in Paris, hacking collective Anonymous has declared war on ISIS — and a Silicon Valley startup has fallen in the firing line.

CloudFlare is a service that helps websites stay online in the face of otherwise-overwhelming traffic: It acts as an intermediary or filter, and is a vital protection against DDoS attacks (sending huge amounts of traffic at a site to try and make it collapse under the weight).

The six-year-old company doesn’t discriminate when it comes to picking customers — even allegedly protecting dozens websites affiliated with ISIS — and it’s come under fire from some members of Anonymous as a result.

amd

Chip-maker AMD has been struck by a class action lawsuit, after it was revealed that they falsely advertised the number of cores in their Bulldozer processor range. The lawsuit from San Jose’s district court claims that while a Bulldozer processor may offer eight cores, these only function as four. AMD’s micro-architecture is largely to blame; due to how separate cores operate within the unit. While each processor may indeed offer eight cores, these cores have been modified, and cannot work independently as a result.
